What day to Celebrate??
Depending how much traveling you want to do, you have the opportunity to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day the 14, 15, 16 or God forbid (or at least Catholic Bishop forbid) the actual holiday March 17th. Because of the way the dates have aligned St. Patrick’s Day has fallen during the Holiest of Holies (Easter Week). The Catholic Church has made the decision that if you attend Mass during this week you are celebrating Easter and not St. Patrick’s Day. All in all, not the end of the world; in my opinion the respectful thing to do. As with all controversial decisions this change is coming with much criticism and debate. Again my opinion, what’s the big deal? I just want the opportunity to let my Irish freak flag fly!!! Give me any day of the year, give me a green river and let the women beware.

Joseph – Here’s a few websites I found that have news articles discussing it all. I tend to agree with one comment I found that notes that St. Patrick would be upset to know that people would place his day over Holy Week which in reality was his Raison d’être.

The group behind the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Dublin has announced that there would be no change to their plans for a parade on March 17.
The last time St Patrick’s Day had to be moved was in 1940 when it was changed to April 3 rd because it coincided with Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week.

I just want to add a small comment on this St Patrick’s Day switch….I’m pretty upset. My birthday has been March 17th, St Patrick’s Day for my entire life; celebrating every year is my pride and joy. I’m sure I will get over it in the near future, however, I cant help being dissapointed for the time being. This blows.

I think we should celebrate the 14th, 15th, 16th, And the 17th,,,That gives us more time to drink even MORE Green Beer! Besides, 1 day isn’t enough time to celebrate St.Patricks day anyway. I’m sure it took more than just 1 day to run all those snakes out of The Chosen Isle anyway, so why should we be restricted to just 1 day to celebrate such an important event?

Rod, you might want to be careful about the “run all those snakes out of The Chosen Isle” bit. As it turns out, there have never been any snakes (the reptile kind) in Ireland. ‘Snakes’ was the word used by the Irish folk for their priests (in their own language of course, they weren’t speaking English at the time). St. Patrick was actually trying to destroy the Irish culture and force the Roman culture on everyone–Christianity was part of that.
Personally, I love St. Patrick’s Day because it celebrates the strength and endurance of a people who have had to face some pretty strong opposition to keep their culture alive. Today, they’ve returned to their own language as their official language (actaully they have 2, Irish and English) and are reviving many of their traditional ways. So, here’s to a people who are amazingly strong (or is it stubborn?)!!!!

Oh bla bla bla, Saint Patrick’s Day. Which word don’t you understand? This day is to honor the man who converted the barbaric tribes of Ireland to Christianity. It is a known historic fact that when two cultures collide, the stronger will prevail and write history the way it chooses. Thus to the victor, History shall be written.

If the Catholic Bishops are _that_ concerned about the holiday being celebrated in Easter Week, why not take it a step further and say that it shouldn’t be celebrated at all during Lent, considering most people use Saint Patrick’s Day to get drunk, which is expressly forbidden during Lent.

Dear Dear people! All should raise their glass for Ireland and joyfully cheer in the name of this beautiful isle! Whatever it really rappresents, St Patrick’s Day is something to remind all of the feeling of belonging to a common culture, it gives hope of everlasting traditions, pure and priceless inheritance of a nation. My only terrible and unsolvable problem is not being irish, but a poor simple italian adoring this wonderful country, so to you people of Ireland directly, sure witnesses of the truth regarding this tradition, I ask permission to celebrate these days together with you for the real lost values of man. Please answer me and save another soul..

I’m not concerned with what particular day to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. I’m just glad that I can claim to be Irish. It should not matter when a person chooses to celebrate the day, just remember that because of a wonderful, strong people that faced many struggles, are we even here. Personally, I will start tomorrow(the 15th), and hope to continue on until I have to come back to work Monday afternoon. I will be getting into my Guinness tonight, and letting the “rocket widget” do what it do!! I logged on to Google noting that St Pats day was due to find that arguably its today! My Mums muttering about “the Church” moving it ‘cos it clashed with Holy Week, my view is that it would make more sense to have Easter at a set date and stop “mucking about”
Anyway as a Yorkshire Irishman, I guess we’ll do our little bit of celebrating on Monday, and I d like to wish you all a Great Day whenever you celebrate it, and have a good Easter too!

If St. Patrick was alive today, he himself would attend church respectfully on March 17th of 2008. It’s a Holy Day, and he’s a Saint! I believe if you want to celebrate, do it the days before. I know the 17th is a tradition, but it’d be quite disrespectful towards St. Patrick himself if one were to drink and feast on such a day like Monday.

i hate irish people and you shouldnt even get a holiday, its because of you that children are beaten and sent to orphanariums as their no good alcoholic parents are too busy making new children (fornicating) to love the ones they have already.
Scottish people are so much better than Irish people, we wear dresses and everything, well kilts, but there bassicly dresses!
Saying that I greatly prefer Irish people to catholics, those bastards changing dates and protesting about abortions, contraception and the like. the Pope is just playing a game of monopoly using saints as street names! Damnit now he has 4 grails on St. Patrick’s day (equivalent to 4 hotels on Mayfair) If we land on that were gunna all be bankrupt (lose our souls). If we don’t strip him of his power now hes going to come into our lovely homes, sleep with our sons and drink our wine! When will it end?!?!

Frank, what kind of drugs are you on?????? It’s because of “Irish” people that children are abused, and we are all alcoholics….how freakin’ lame is that? My children don’t even drink alcohol. Are you sure you aren’t half functioning in a Scotch stupor? The only thing I can agree on is the fact that I do like to “fornicate”, but that is because we bear “real me”-Irish men, because they are not a bunch of sissy’s runnin’ around in skirts.

Well, my belly is full and my head starts to swim as I feast and raise a glass to the Fair Ilse. Meagan, Thank You so much for the comments. That bothered me all night, about how just plain “rude” frank was. If he couldn’t say something nice, he shouldn’t have said anything at all. Why would he have even been on this site. I don’t look for Scottish sites to go slam people. I’m not racists against any nationality. I would never have been negative about Scottish people had he not insulted our beloved people, and the crap didn’t even make sense. I think that the Irish are some of, if not the the PROUDEST in the world. I am very PROUD to be Irish-even just a little bit, I’m still Irish!!!!!!!
